Dear General Assembly Member:
As you determine the policies of the Commonwealth over the remaining weeks of the legislative session, the Virginia Business Council asks you to consider the views of the senior management of Virginia’s largest businesses.
As we all know, we are in the midst of extraordinarily difficult times. Serious problems in the financial industry have caused a near collapse of our economy. Severe repercussions are being felt internationally, nationally and here at home in Virginia.
As Virginians, we cannot solve the economic problems alone. Effective solutions on a large scale must come from appropriate federal policies. However, we do have a role to play, as does each state in our union.
It is the opinion of the Council that successful solutions to our severe economic challenges should be aimed at strengthening the business climate and thereby, creating the opportunity for increased commerce and very importantly - more jobs. Strengthening the business climate will provide economic opportunity for Virginians and increased revenue to our state and local governments for necessary services.
For many years, the Virginia Business Council has adhered to basic fundamental principles in formulating its positions on public policy issues. These tried and true principles support the core of Virginia’s economic strength. The Council supports the use of a broad-based tax system that provides adequate revenue for the efficient provision of priority services, including long-term solutions to Virginia’s critical infrastructure needs, and preservation of Virginia’s AAA bond rating, an important symbol of fiscal excellence.
These fundamental principles, applied well, will strengthen and support the business climate and quality of life in Virginia. We urge that you keep these principles at the forefront as you debate and determine the public policies of the Commonwealth. Maintaining a positive business environment that enables a vibrant economy is our best hope for future prosperity and security.
Sincerely,
